Padma Bhushan, Professor Yash Pal

These words are the befitting tribute to the grand and grandeur of Prof. Yash Pal's'boldness and ingenuity to accomplish something noteworthy. Born on 26th November, 1926_ he was blessed with a scientific bent of mind which he blissfully catapulted to garner the matrix that helped him to emerge as a valorous fort in the arena of physics.

Prof. Yash Pal's accomplishments are not only voluminous but also luminous. H$_ is a Doctorate in Physics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1958). His versatile genius elevated him to the top-notch posts like the Chairman, UGC (1986-91), Secretary, Department of Science & Technology (1984-86), Chief Consultant, Planning Commission (1983-84), Scientist, Indian Space Research Organisation (1980-83),

Director, Space Application centre, Ahmedabad (1973-80),Chairman National Institute of Design (1984-91), Chairman, National Council of Science Museums,Chairman, Sky Art Conference, Austria(1982), General President, Indian Science Congress (1989-90). At the same time in the areas of cosmic rays, high energy physics, astrophysics, science education,communication & development he has carved a distinct niche.Currently he is shouldering a number of responsibilities like Chairman, BHARAT JAN VIGYAN JATHA, President NCSTC Network, Member: Council of Centre tor Rural And Industrial Development (Chandigarh), Trustee: Indira Gandhi Memorial Trust (till 1997), Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, Member: Governing Council, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Member: Organising Committee of Indira Gandhi Conferences on World Affairs, Founding Member: Steering Committee for the Project on the "History of Indian Philosophy Science and Culture". He is also responsible for conceptualization and establishment or development of a number of institutions including Inter University Centres. He has also published a large number of papers in national.and international journals. Some of his scientific work led to : The first observations of pair-production of elementary particles, Elucidation of properties of K-mesons & Hyperons. Understanding the role of cosmic & cosmic-ray neutrions, Prediction of rise in p-p cross section, Recognition of importance of excited states of particles in multiple meson production at high energies, First development of the leaky-box model of cosmic ray propagation in the galazy and aspects of cosmic-ray phenomenology in the atmosphere and below ground.

Prof. Yash Pal is a scientist of par excellence. His contributions have been rightly acclaimed by the Government of India and awarded him with Padma Bhushan in 1976, for his contribution to science & Space Technology. Besides, he is the proud recipient of scores of other awards and rewards.

He that labours in any: great or laudable undertaking has his fatigues first supported by hope. and afterward rewarded by joy. Prof. Yash Pal is a rare example of this.
